Facebook in major rebrand – announcing its renaming to Meta

1 Min Read . Oct 29, 2021

Well, it’s official. The parent social media company as Facebook from past 17 years behind Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus has a new name. Yes, it’s happening.

Facebook’s business entity is now Meta.

To be clear, Facebook, the app, will remain, along with all of its other brands and identities. Similar as Google moves to “Alphabet” as a larger corporate title, Facebook’s various projects will now all be under the “Meta” banner. This will reflect its evolving focus on the next generation of digital connection.

Meta to emphasize virtual reality connectivity

“Meta” comes from the Greek word for beyond. And the CEO of Big Tech described the name as appropriate for Facebook. As the company focuses on placing virtual and augmented reality in a central location. Demos at Thursday’s Connect event clued at a future . This hint directs to seamless connectivity between Oculus VR devices and the Messenger app. To an outsider, a metaverse can look like a version of VR. . In a metaverse could use a headset to enter a virtual world that connects all kinds of digital environments.

According to Mark Zuckerberg

“From now on, we will be metaverse-first, not Facebook-first. That means that over time you won’t need a Facebook account to use our other services. As our new brand starts showing up in our products, I hope people around the world come to know the Meta brand and the future we stand for.”

Facebook’s larger business structure will now be placed under the Meta banner. And the company separates its operational feeds into two segments. One is the “App family,” which is Facebook, as we basically know it. And the next is “Reality Labs” covering VR and AR technologies and other evolving tech bets.

No plans to change the existing digital architecture

In practice, the rebrand is not a major change. It is just flagging the company’s intention to make the evolving metaverse concept. And, the name change comes as no big surprise. Already many have speculated that “Meta” was likely Facebook’s new name. As Zuckerberg charities already own several “meta” related brand titles. And the company has also bought meta URLs lately months before the announcement.

By changing the name, Meta can jump right into VR and AR technology without appearing as if they are two separate companies. Facebook itself certainly had this issue in mind when discussing the ultimate decision of renaming. In Fact, to make a brand pivot of this magnitude Facebook has shown no plans to abandon its two social media websites or its messaging services, or its augmented reality company, Facebook Reality Labs. Metaverse has increased attention, thanks to technological advancements and more engaging projects that will aim to make Facebook – synonymous with the next phase of digital connection.
